At the start of the decade, Cave had rediscovered high-energy post-punk with his Grinderman side project; his goth rock classic \u201cRed Right Hand\u201d was resonating with a new audience as the theme song for <em>Peaky Blinders<\/em>; and he\u2019d written the screenplay for the Tom Hardy\/Shia LaBeouf drama <em>Lawless<\/em>, which competed for the Palme d\u2019Or at Cannes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then in 2015, Cave\u2019s\u00a0teenage son fell from a cliff and died. Rather than do press for his 2016 LP <em>Skeleton Tree<\/em>, Cave agreed to participate in a documentary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nickcave.com\/films\/one-more-time-with-feeling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One More Time with Feeling<\/a>, which shows his family\u2019s grief in agonizing detail. In 2018, longtime Bad Seeds pianist Conway Savage succumbed to cancer. And this year, Nick Cave &amp; The Bad Seeds\u2019 17th studio album, <em>Ghosteen<\/em>, was released. It\u2019s a thoroughly somber plunge into trauma and the impotence of loss \u2013 beautiful, but devastating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even a listener who\u2019s not familiar with Nick Cave\u2019s personal tragedies will recognize a major stylistic shift in his lyrics between his 2013 album <em>Push the Sky Away<\/em> and <em>Skeleton Tree<\/em>. The former looks outward at the sorts of local characters and stories that have long been Cave\u2019s trademark, while the latter turns sharply inward and uses stream of consciousness to depict emotional ephemera. It\u2019s hard to guess where Cave will go after <em>Ghosteen<\/em>, but a return to more narrative song structures feels unlikely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that is the case, \u201cJubilee Street\u201d may represent the final version of Nick Cave in classic storyteller mode. Cave\u2019s Jubilee Street is a red light district that\u2019s been taken over by Russians, and a former madame has turned to shaking down our narrator (\u201cThe problem was she had a little black book \/ And my name was written on every page\u201d). The song builds slowly over a repetitive, four-chord progression, eventually swelling into the sort of high gothic drama no one can sell like The Bad Seeds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m a fan of both <em>Skeleton Tree<\/em> and <em>Ghosteen<\/em>, and a selection from either would better represent Nick Cave\u2019s artistic journey in this decade. But as much as it now feels like it\u2019s from another era, \u201cJubilee Street\u201d is just too good to ignore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No one has aged more in the 2010s than Nick Cave.
