{"id":138,"date":"2019-12-18T23:58:10","date_gmt":"2019-12-18T23:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.richbradley.org\/songs\/?p=138"},"modified":"2020-04-25T18:53:11","modified_gmt":"2020-04-25T18:53:11","slug":"danny-nedelko","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.richbradley.org\/songs\/201x-favorites\/danny-nedelko\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cDanny Nedelko\u201d \u2013 Idles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bristol punks IDLES perform Danny Nedelko on Later\u2026 with Jools Holland\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fMg9kvWYHfU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, the frontman of Nottingham electro-punk band Sleaford Mods accused Idles of class appropriation. \u201cI thought they were kind of a street band,\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/live\/2019\/feb\/11\/sleaford-mods-webchat-post-your-questions-now?page=with:block-5c6409b5e4b04a6f567de9df#block-5c6409b5e4b04a6f567de9df\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>, \u201cbut it turns out they\u2019re not working class.\u201d He went on to explain why he found their unabashedly progressive second album, <em>Joy as an Act of Resistance<\/em>, personally offensive: \u201cI also became jaded by this idea that we were a band that was campaigning for social justice, when we\u2019re not, we\u2019re just talking about what\u2019s around us. Music can\u2019t solve political problems. And I think their take on it is cliched, patronising, insulting and mediocre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked to respond by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/idles-interview-the-bristol-punk-band-playing-to-their-strength-and-sensitivity-g6ml36kk7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Times<\/a>, Idles guitarist Mark Bowen defended his band\u2019s approach: \u201cIf you\u2019re angry about inequality, you have to preach equality as an alternative rather than go, \u2018fuck you, you\u2019re wrong.\u2019 Because you\u2019re not going to get anywhere with that. The fact that we\u2019re still talking about the same stuff punks were dealing with in the 1970s means that \u2018fuck you\u2019 thing didn\u2019t work.\u201d Singer Joe Talbot added: \u201cThere\u2019s no authenticity in just being a prick to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I understand class appropriation is serious business in the UK (I mean, I\u2019ve heard \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yuTMWgOduFM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Common People<\/a>\u201d), but I\u2019m sure I can\u2019t really know the extent of Idles\u2019 offense. It\u2019s true that it doesn\u2019t sound like they come from working class backgrounds \u2013 they met in college and briefly ran an indie night club in Bristol. British hipsters, then, would seem to be the general vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, is it phony for a bunch of hipsters to play up a blue collar punk image while singing about the dangers of toxic masculinity? It does sound pretty terrible when you put it that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Idles pull it off (at least to these ignorant American ears), because they\u2019re 100% sincere. All the joyful, angry, human sentiments Talbot is yelling about are completely earnest, whether he\u2019s adopting a working class affectation or not. Maybe Sleaford Mods would have a point if Talbot were singing about his asshole manager at his dirt-paying job (check out the Mods\u2019 terrific \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=18MHgX-U5To\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fizzy<\/a>\u201d for a delightfully genuine example of that). That would be phony, but that\u2019s not what <em>Joy as an Act of Resistance<\/em> is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn\u2019t require any deep analysis to judge what Idles are about, either. \u201cDanny Nedelko\u201d is a pro-immigrant anthem that opens with the line, \u201cMy blood brother is an immigrant \/ A beautiful immigrant.\u201d It\u2019s as blunt as it sounds, and it\u2019s positive, and sure, call it a social justice anthem. But inauthentic? You tell me what you feel when you get to the \u201cyeah yeah yeah yeah \/ ey ey ey ey \/ Danny Nedelko!\u201d chorus.
