{"id":126,"date":"2019-12-15T18:17:20","date_gmt":"2019-12-15T18:17:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.richbradley.org\/songs\/?p=126"},"modified":"2020-04-25T18:21:04","modified_gmt":"2020-04-25T18:21:04","slug":"two-weeks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.richbradley.org\/songs\/201x-favorites\/two-weeks\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cTwo Weeks\u201d \u2013 FKA twigs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FKA twigs - Two Weeks\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3yDP9MKVhZc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I had to pick one song to represent 2010s music for future generations, I\u2019d probably go with \u201cTwo Weeks.\u201d There\u2019s that particular minimalist ambience that became so prevalent after Kanye\u2019s <em>808s &amp; Heartbreak<\/em>; the processed synth throb perfected by James Blake and Arca (who plays it here); the underlying trip-hop beat over rhythmic, pitch-shifted vocal loops, pointing to the incredibly sustained influence of Massive Attack and Burial in recent years; and a singular artist in the middle of it all, curating a rich, multi-sensory experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FKA twigs is not the only performer to tick all of these boxes in a major release within the past ten years. You could make the same case for Frank Ocean, Dev Hynes, The Weeknd, hell even Bj\u00f6rk (in part due to Arca\u2019s presence in her later work, but I mean, Bj\u00f6rk\u2019s also been doing this stuff since before Arca was born). I would argue though that \u201cTwo Weeks\u201d is the most successful at bringing all these elements together, and also it\u2019s just a crazy good song that doesn\u2019t require overanalyzing to love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there\u2019s any reason to waver on considering \u201cTwo Weeks\u201d the epitome of 201X music, it\u2019s that it\u2019s too sexy for this decade. I assume we can all agree this hasn\u2019t been a sexy ten years. It\u2019s a miracle we\u2019re not already in a full-blown Children of Men situation. Still, you can view the candid sensual fire in \u201cTwo Weeks\u201d as aspirational, and the vampiric metaphor in the chorus is certainly of its time (\u201cPull out the incisor \/ Give me two weeks, you won\u2019t recognize her\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FKA twigs is Tahliah Barnett, a British performer whose music was initially labeled R&amp;B, though it clearly transcends easy genre-tagging. She started out as a backup dancer, much like earlier pop legends J-Lo and, uh, K-Fed, before revealing an infinitely broader range of musical talent on her self-released 2012 debut EP and taking off from there. Though she\u2019s only released two full-length albums to date, they both rank among the decade\u2019s best. Barnett\u2019s music is always intense, challenging, and deeply emotional.
